Simply put, incorporating native plants into residential and commercial landscaping builds habitat for birds, pollinators, lizards, bugs, etc. Additionally, using native plants will significantly reduce irrigation requirements and fertilizer and pesticide use. California cholla, aka snake cholla, aka cane cholla, grows in long snakelike cylinders that can both get very tall and sprawl to cover a lot of ground.

Buckwheat blooms in late spring with rounded clusters of tiny flowers that look like a puff ball from far away, then keeps the flowers until fall, when they fade from white or pink to orange or brown. Lemonade berry grows as either a shrub or small tree, with more upright and tree-like growth inland and more low, sprawling growth in coastal areas. Whether you use this plant in your landscaping as a hedge or specimen tree, it will produce small red fruits that are an important food source for local wildlife such as birds and small mammals. Lemonade berry is closely related and grows similarly to another California native plant, sugar bush (Rhus ovata). California sagebrush (only one of the state’s native Artemisia species) has small, hairy leaves in light green or gray and sparse flower clusters ranging in color from white to yellow.

If you’re just getting started on your native garden, here are 32 of the best native plants for California landscapes. Foothill native Our Lord's Candle succulent is grown for its long, sharp-tip silvery-green blades that give it texture and structure. Spring bloom, when it occurs, is a tall spike covered in creamy white flowers. This beautiful perennial native poppy is often called the "fried egg plant" for its enormous white crepe papery flowers with their golden yellow centers. Matilija poppy spreads by aggressive underground runners, so plant it on a slope or other location with room to run. Informal gardens are not usually about focusing on a particular plant.

Plants tend to spread by runners so give it room to roam. If you need a little help in that department, contact your local lawn care pro for help. They’ve got the expertise and know-how” to implement your native plant ideas. It is true that a "cottage" garden border is the most likely example of an informal garden. In these three examples, there’s not a rose or delphinium in sight, but each is totally informal.

As a shrub or small tree, it can grow very tall very quickly under proper care, and its white flowers attract butterflies and bees in summer. This wildflower has many cultivars in coastal Northern and Central California, with spring blooms in blue, purple, pink, white, or yellow. Some varieties grow in clumps and work well as a colorful groundcover in landscapes. The California fuchsia is a species of willowherb with bright red, thin flowers that somewhat resemble the flowers of a true fuchsia plant (thus the common name). It’s sometimes called the hummingbird flower because its flowers, which bloom in summer and fall, are extremely attractive to hummingbirds. Low growing, mat-forming perennial hummingbird sage has fruity fragrant leaves and stalks of intense pink flowers in spring.

I suggest talking to the technicians at your local nursery to see if their stock will fit your needs and preferences. My hope is that, with newer irrigation controls hitting the market and better training for landscape workers, some of these problems will improve. With good information so easily accessible by the general public, I hope the homeowner behaviors improve, too. As for information, I have been referring more and more people to reach out to their local ag extension offices and master gardener programs.

Get easy-to-understand, actionable yard tips that will give you the greenest grass on the block. The front yard gets scorched by the sun year-round, while the back yard is shady and is noticeably cooler by several degrees. This means plants that do well in the backyard will struggle to survive in the front.

If this speaks to you, chances are you love balance and clean lines in general. For more information about native California plants and why you should consider adding them to your garden, check out the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) native plant database. Ornamental plants require more water and are much more susceptible to insect damage and disease. Managing pests (including weeds) and disease in ornamentals requires more labor and typically includes some form of herbicide or pesticide use. Plus, ornamentals typically need to be on a fertilizer program.

Chapter 6 describes the qualities of a successful student's experience, while Chapter 9 expands the definition of education success, which can be viewed as student engagement, learning outcomes, and career development. The implementation of these multidimensional education value indicators should be supported by the role transformation of students, universities, governments, and educational firms. It is beneficial to serve communities, encourage diversity and creativity, and make higher education more dynamic based on running an activity-based financial system. Coates analyzes how higher education moves beyond merely meeting basic needs to fulfilling higher needs by integrating extensive analytical and empirical research to forecast the widespread socioeconomic need. Both developed countries and developing countries compete for world-class universities to raise the standard of higher education (Cremonini et al., 2014), but this macro campaign for world-class education leads universities into a reputation trap. It is appalling that homogenization of higher education submerges diversified institutional services, and student interests and the need for differentiated services create misalignment issues with institutional positioning and product offerings.

College and university leaders, faculty, funders, and policymakers routinely and rightly cite social and economic mobility as a core goal. Unfortunately, existing data and analyses often fail to account for the distinct missions, unique student populations, and complex operating environments of institutions. These gaps make it difficult for higher education leaders and stakeholders to understand how effectively schools are leveling the playing field and achieving their social and economic mobility goals.

Helping students afford their college dreams

The on-demand sessions include watchable content for prospective students and useful transfer information. Chapman University takes chat to the next level and creates 1-to-1 student connections before the admissions process. Questions that were once answered only on college tours can now be answered right away with live chat. Prospective students can connect directly with current student ambassadors from various disciplines or even with university staff. Technology like Unibuddy helps any higher education institution implement this.

Why the New York Appeals Court Judges Reversed Harvey Weinstein’s Conviction

“The art portfolio, it didn't find that interesting,” he said, except for clocking which type of program a student would be interested in, such as painting or sculpture. According to a September survey from higher education-focused magazine Intelligent, half of universities were using AI in their admissions process. Institutions reported most often using AI to review transcripts and recommendation letters. Many of them stated that they used it to review personal essays as well, with some going as far as to conduct preliminary interviews with applicants using AI. While O’Connell said the institution needs to spend the next several months gathering the data before ultimately deciding on more uses, Devoe believes this could ultimately lend itself to budget and time savings.

That’s where interactive elements such as virtual tours, on-demand information sessions, and chatbots for quick answers to questions came into play. Campuses employing these tools were able to connect with prospective students - maybe even better than before. One of the most fun parts of visiting a college campus is getting a personalized tour from the admissions team. At Dickinson College, there is a wide range of virtual options, such as student-led virtual campus tours. They offer a variety of virtual options, including virtual interviews with their admissions team and virtual info sessions. On The George Washington University site, it’s easy to find virtual visits and, even better, an archive of on-demand information sessions.

Contact alumni directly and find out what they and their classmates are doing? Recent alumni can provide you a good indication of whether a design program is right for you. They can also help you develop a clear educational and career roadmap for the future. The online learning experience blends interaction with student colleagues and faculty during live class sessions and self-paced coursework assignments submitted through the learning management system. Faculty facilitate live class sessions that include interactive, engaging and collaborative small-group discussions.

Therefore, transformational shifts are required to activate the new education economy, and universities need available information about their appropriateness and potential to provide more varied education resources to diverse people. Similarly, rather than concentrating their effort in meeting necessities, students and graduates will lead the industries, organizations, professions, and communities to alter their society. To reconcile the mismatch between supply and demand, Coates addresses the university change as the market design to articulate the new education economy. With the distinct features of a neoliberal and student-centered perspective, a higher education transformed arrangement points out the future directions of market and policy design in higher education. A school’s curriculum is a good indicator of the quality of design education you can expect to receive.

Program Outcomes

Student-centered philosophy overarches the institutional design, as Coates illustrates, the educational experience is at the core of the creation of an academic value. This is also the reason why the institutional design framework offers a succinct structure for understanding and forecasting the actual practice. Institutional partnerships with university and commercial education service firms may stipulate shared governance and management arrangements, service standards, and characteristics of the target student markets. The innovative partnerships will take shape through existing regulatory and institutional structures because the governance and basic commercial arrangements are outsourced or cosourced. Coates claims that it is essential to understand the kinds of partnerships that will prosper in the future; therefore, higher education institutions require academic, political, and commercial capabilities. Some major in fashion because they dream of one day seeing their creations on the runways of Milan.

Nearly all facets of higher education have been affected by EdTech and its sophisticated platform firms, and the impact of market capitalization on higher education through EdTech has grown to be a big and complex issue. Coates calls for a greater emphasis on the educationally flavored commercial orientation of education reforms, especially the new education value created by the constellation of education, technology, and business. One of the tricky aspects for especially large universities is the diverse range of education systems living under one roof. Some universities realize that these separate schools have very different schools of thought, so providing them their own school sub-brand helps them connect better to prospective students. Well, Dickinson College has found a way to overlap virtual with personalization by offering student-led virtual campus tours and virtual interviews with their admissions team. Their home page includes a gentle wave of threads in the background that reacts and pulsates when a visitor’s mouse pointer collides with any of the threads.

The ASO prevented the splicing factor from binding to the TEAD mRNA, so it couldn’t ultimately splice it out. We got pretty much only inactive TEAD when we treated MASH mice with the ASO,” said Olefsky. “All the molecules in the pathway were known, but no one knew if or how they interacted. We put the pathway together, showing each step in this intracellular signaling module.

Given the clean-sheet opportunity, the TRP began its work by exploring the philosophical, historical, and theoretical underpinnings of concepts that could be built into the classification. We covered the concepts of social and economic mobility; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and identifying institutional environments that schools create to enable student access and success. Any time we confront a situation in which we are moving from a current state of affairs to a new state, we have a situation that is well-suited for a design approach. In Design for Change in Higher Education, we argue for leveraging the power of learning experience design because it creates processes that are more participatory, student-focused, inquiry-driven, and necessarily iterative than the alternatives. In other words, educational innovation and change are best understood as design processes if we want them to be effective and culturally appropriate for the contexts of higher education. Digitally empowered firms were identified using statistical clustering analysis based on advisors’ responses about their firms’ use of technology.

At that time, we will also share the first set of eight papers in a new series of white papers on issues of higher education classification and methodological decisions related to the upcoming versions of the Carnegie Classifications. Full-time HR staff may be more prone to leaving the organization, taking valuable knowledge and expertise with them. Fractional professionals can provide continuity of service that ensures important tasks like compliance don’t slip through the cracks. Our Fractional HR professionals can bring in new ideas, perspectives, and strategies that may be difficult for internal staff to think of or execute due to long-term familiarity with the organization’s culture and operations. Both O’Connell and Devoe were quick to point out the technology is not being used to dictate which students should and should not be accepted into the institution. Instead, the data illuminate the likelihood of the already-accepted students choosing to attend the university. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is utilizing machine learning in its admission process, in what is becoming a growing trend among higher education institutions.

Rather than focusing solely on the acquisition of technical skills, the program emphasizes a holistic understanding of instructional design. As the capstone project, you will design a learning experience for a real-world application that demonstrates the application of theories and concepts. How do you Email the President or Vice President?

After his calls at the White House door went unanswered, Dickens let himself in and walked through the mansion from room to room on the lower and upper floors. Finally coming upon a room filled with nearly two dozen people, he was shocked and appalled to see many of them spitting on the carpet. Dickens later wrote, “I take it for granted the Presidential housemaids have high wages.” Until the Civil War, however, most White House servants were enslaved people. Moreover, the wages of all White House employees—as well as the expenses for running the White House, including staging official functions—were paid for by the president. Not until 1909 did Congress provide appropriations to pay White House servants.

The building’s history begins in 1792, when a public competition was held to choose a design for a presidential residence in the new capital city of Washington. Thomas Jefferson, later the country’s third president (1801–09), using the pseudonymous initials “A.Z.,” was among those who submitted drawings, but Irish American architect James Hoban won the commission (and a $500 prize) with his plan for a Georgian mansion in the Palladian style. The structure was to have three floors and more than 100 rooms and would be built in sandstone imported from quarries along Aquia Creek in Virginia. Labourers, including local enslaved people, were housed in temporary huts built on the north side of the premises. They were joined by skilled stonemasons from Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1793. Because of crowding within the executive mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901.

By 1948, the residence's load-bearing walls and wood beams were found to be close to failure. Under Harry S. Truman, the interior rooms were completely dismantled and a new internal load-bearing steel frame was constructed inside the walls. Once the structural work was completed, the interior rooms were rebuilt. During the War of 1812 the building was burned by the British, and Pres. The Madisons eventually moved into the nearby Octagon House, the Washington mansion of John Tayloe, a Virginia plantation owner. Reconstruction and expansion began under Hoban’s direction, but the building was not ready for occupancy until 1817, during the administration of Pres.

Therefore, please do not send items of personal importance, such as family photographs, because items may not be returned. When President Harry S. Truman moved into the White House in 1945, he became concerned about the state of the building. In 1947, a chandelier in the Blue Room almost fell on Bess Truman and her guests from the Daughters of the American Revolution, and in 1948, the leg of Margaret Truman’s piano pierced through the floor of what is now the private dining room. Engineers confirmed that the building was at risk of collapse, and Truman and his family relocated to Blair House, the president’s guesthouse located nearby at 1651 Pennsylvania Ave. Set on 18 acres of land, the White House is made up of the Executive Residence, the East Wing, and the West Wing, with its famous Oval Office.

The practice continued until 1885, when newly elected Grover Cleveland arranged for a presidential review of the troops from a grandstand in front of the White House instead of the traditional open house. President Bill Clinton briefly revived the New Year's Day open house in his first term. The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA. Lastly, it’s important that all messages follow standard protocol by including your name, address, and contact information so that you can be contacted if necessary. With these guidelines in mind, submitting an online message remains a great resource for contacting the president effectively and efficiently.

The White House has undergone many renovations throughout its history, starting with Thomas Jefferson, who, along with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, added the East and West Colonnades, which now link the East and West Wings with the Executive Residence. The first major renovation of the White House took place during the War of 1812. On August 24, 1814, British troops marched on Washington, DC, and burned the White House, the Capitol, and several other public buildings.

The President and the First Lady strongly encourage all Americans to consider making contributions to their favorite charities in lieu of gifts to the First Family. And, please note, the White House is unable to accept cash, checks, bonds, gift certificates, foreign currency, or other monetary equivalents. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

Today, the residence includes six levels with 132 rooms, including 16 family and guest rooms and 35 bathrooms, and is spread over 55,000 square feet. The White House has been home to every president from John Adams to Joe Biden, and it is an enduring symbol of democracy and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, attracting 500,000 visitors annually. In 1842 the visit to the United States of the English novelist Charles Dickens brought an official invitation to the White House.

The White House and grounds cover just over 18 acres (about 7.3 hectares). Before the construction of the North Portico, most public events were entered from the South Lawn, the grading and planting of which was ordered by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson also drafted a planting plan for the North Lawn that included large trees that would have mostly obscured the house from Pennsylvania Avenue. During the mid-to-late 19th century a series of ever larger greenhouses were built on the west side of the house, where the current West Wing is located.

Construction took place between 1792 and 1800, with an exterior of Aquia Creek sandstone painted white. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence in October 1817. Exterior construction continued with the addition of the semicircular South Portico in 1824 and the North Portico in 1829. The White House and its landscaped grounds occupy 18 acres (7.2 hectares).

The Neoclassical design of the White House is based primarily on architectural concepts inherited from the Roman architect Vitruvius and the Venetian architect Andrea Palladio. Our first president, George Washington, selected the site for the White House in 1791. The following year, the cornerstone was laid and a design submitted by Irish-born architect James Hoban was chosen.

How to Email to the President and Members of Congress

We'll be in touch with the latest information on how President Biden and his administration are working for the American people, as well as ways you can get involved and help our country build back better. "As Palestinian journalists, we urgently appeal to you, our colleagues globally, with a demand for immediate and unwavering action against the Biden administration's ongoing complicity in the systematic slaughter and persecution of journalists in Gaza," the letter states. Outside the dinner site, protesters have pledged to rally against Israel continuing its war in Gaza. The conflict began after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, that left 1,200 people dead and saw over 200 more taken hostage.

The White House has a form on its website on which one can fill out their email address. The form asks for the message type, full name, email, phone number, address and provides a text box to compose the message. Unfortunately, the White House cannot respond to every message due to the large volume of messages it receives. Many websites also offer a contact form, but we recommend using this only as a last resort. Many online contact forms go to the website maintenance team and often don’t reach the representative or their staff. Emailing the President, your senator, a House representative, or another member of Congress or the government s is an integral part of keeping elected officials informed of our opinions.

In the minds of most Americans, the building was not a “palace” from which the president ruled but merely a temporary office and residence from which he served the people he governed. The White House belonged to the people, not the president, and the president occupied it only for as long as the people allowed him to stay. The idea of a president refusing to leave the White House after losing an election or an impeachment trial was unthinkable. The East Wing, which contains additional office space, was added to the White House in 1942. Among its uses, the East Wing has intermittently housed the offices and staff of the first lady and the White House Social Office.

This letter should include details about why the individual wants to meet with the president and what topics they’d like to discuss if approved. With the right effort and creativity, there are unique ways to get your message across to the President of the United States. Sending gifts or donations is one way to make a statement that could potentially be heard by the Commander-in-Chief. That said, there are certain guidelines that need to be followed if you’re going to use an online forum as a platform for reaching out to the leader of the free world. For starters, avoid taking on any inflammatory language or rhetoric – these tend to have a polarizing effect which can cause more harm than good.

The White House and its surrounding grounds serve as the home of the President of the United States and First Family. It’s also a museum of American history—and a place where that history continues to unfold every day. When organizing any kind of demonstration outside of the White House gates, there are certain areas where groups are allowed to gather without prior permission.

If you feel strongly about something, send an email to your congressman. Beautiful landscaping has graced the White House grounds since the administration of Thomas Jefferson. The South Lawn features over three dozen commemorative trees that date back to the 1870s. During the Kennedy administration, Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon redesigned the White House gardens, including the famed Rose Garden outside the West Wing. The East Garden, also redesigned by Mellon, was later named in honor of Jacqueline Kennedy. First lady Michelle Obama added a 1,100-square-foot vegetable garden on the south grounds in 2009.

The three-level southern façade combines Palladian and neoclassical architectural styles. The south portico was completed in 1824.[33] At the center of the southern façade is a neoclassical projected bow of three bays. The bow is flanked by five bays, the windows of which, as on the north façade, have alternating segmented and pointed pediments at first-floor level. The bow has a ground-floor double staircase leading to an Ionic colonnaded loggia and the Truman Balcony, built in 1946.[33] The more modern third floor is hidden by a balustraded parapet and plays no part in the composition of the façade. Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay.

Hoban’s reconstruction included the addition of east and west terraces on the main building’s flanks; a semicircular south portico and a colonnaded north portico were added in the 1820s. The mansion quickly became a focal point of the new federal city and was symbolically linked to the United States Capitol by way of Pennsylvania Avenue. Following his inauguration in March 1801, Jefferson became the second president to reside in the executive mansion. In keeping with his ardent republicanism, he opened the house to public visitation each morning, a tradition that was continued (during peacetime) by all his successors.

According to whitehouse.gov, members of the American public can tour the White House by scheduling a visit through their member of Congress. Citizens of a foreign countries can arrange tours through their embassy. Contrary to a popular myth that the building was painted white to hide scorch marks after the fire in 1814, the residence was first painted white in 1798 to protect the exterior from weather damage. “There had been a pool inside the White House added by Franklin Roosevelt that he would use as exercise for his polio, but later, Gerald Ford wanted an outdoor pool,” says Fling.

The general layout of the White House grounds today is based on the 1935 design by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. of the Olmsted Brothers firm, commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the Kennedy administration, the White House Rose Garden was redesigned by Rachel Lambert Mellon. Bordering the East Colonnade is the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, which was begun by Jacqueline Kennedy but completed after her husband's assassination. Italian artisans, brought to Washington to help in constructing the U.S. This was done to link the new portico with the earlier carved roses above the entrance. Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities.

The private residence of the first family is located on the second floor. In addition to the Presidential Bedroom Suite, the second floor includes historic spaces, such as the Queens’ Bedroom, the Treaty Room, the Yellow Oval Room, the Center Hall, and the East and West Sitting Rooms. The central Executive Residence is home to the president’s living spaces and the State Rooms. The ground floor originally housed service areas, but now includes the Diplomatic Reception Room, the White House Library, the Map Room, the Vermeil Room, and the China Room. The State Floor features some of the White House’s most treasured spaces, including the East Room, the Blue, Red, and Green Rooms, the State Dining Room, and the Family Dining Room. During the 19th century the White House became a symbol of American democracy.

Menu Top of Binion's Steakhouse Downtown Las Vegas 128 Fremont St

A brief walk through the casino brings us to the renowned glass elevator which offers a fantastic view as we ride to the top floor labeled “Steakhouse”. We step off of the elevator and enter into a dim-lit world of old Las Vegas charm, Top of Binion’s Steakhouse. Service was good like in an old world steakhouse. We were 5 people and all of us ordered different cuts of meat but we all had the same complaint...no flavor and flat. Not worth the price, go to some of the newer steakhouses for a "good steak".

Kid-Friendly Shows in Las Vegas

With our appetizers gone, we are ready to move on and try a couple of the signature salads before we make our way to the heavier entrees. Sal returns with our drinks and I am impressed to find the mai-tai served in a tall glass, garnished with a fresh orange slice and a single maraschino cherry. It is sweet and tart, with a strong finish of quality rum, and my friend’s martini is one of the best he has ever had. With drinks in hand, Sal leaves us to look over our menus, and as we glance through, another server arrives at our table with a basket of warm dinner rolls and a side of whipped butter. The rolls are fresh, with a very crisp outer layer that opens up to a light fluffy interior, and the whipped butter spreads easily and melts quickly. They are delicious, but I limit myself to only one, because along with a reputation for old-school charm, Top of Binion’s Steakhouse is known for enormous portion sizes.

Downtown Las Vegas

Some are even slightly larger, able to accommodate up to eight adults, and all are in high demand. From the 24th floor of the hotel, the view is astounding, and it is no wonder that Binion’s is a premier destination for special events and romantic evenings. From our booth, we look out over the valley, directly past the Stratosphere Tower. This high up, we can see far off into the distance, until the bright lights of Las Vegas end and the dark silhouettes of the surrounding mountains begin. Binion’s Gambling Hall is an iconic reminder of a different time, a classic era when Fremont Street was the hottest and hippest place in Vegas.

Their design includes two white-box galleries within the soaring interior, performance and workshop areas and an outpost of the Black Art Library. Welcome to our photo series Eater Scenes, where Eater Vegas visits some of the city's great restaurants and bars to capture them at a certain, and very specific, point in the day. Restaurant has an absolutely great view and has been there for years. The founders of a downtown art gallery see the potential for a vibrant community and art hub in the East Village and are putting the pieces in place.

With a definite emphasis on quality steak, Binion’s serves only Creekstone Farms Midwestern, corn fed, Premium Black Angus beef, and every single cut is aged for a minimum of 28 days. Steaks are broiled, or sautéed with cabernet, peppercorn or béarnaise sauce, and there is also the option for either a blue cheese or boursin cheese crust. After weighing our options, we decide to start off with the Pan Fried Crab Cakes and a bowl of Lobster Bisque. Sal commends us on our selections and disappears to place the order, giving us enough time to peruse the menu a little longer and decide what direction we plan to take this meal. This next rather interesting entrée was inspired by cowboys who were once regulars at the steakhouse during rodeos. The dish consists of a whole Australian lobster tail, fanned out, pressed, breaded and then pan fried.

So stop weighing the odds and take a good gamble. Head into Binion’s Gambling Hall and Hotel, ride the renowned glass elevator all the way to the top, and discover the hidden treasures inside. At Top of Binion’s Steakhouse you will find generous portions of high quality cuisine, first-class hospitality and the best view in Downtown. Get out here and discover the Fremont Street experience.

The cakes are dense, full of quality lump crab meat, and the fried breading offers a splendid crunch to complement the moist, buttery interior. The lobster bisque, served in a moderate sized bowl, is similar in color to traditional tomato soup, topped with a scoop of home-made cream and sprinkled with fresh chives. The broth is thick and savory, with hints of pepper, onion and celery. As I continue scooping, I also discover several large chunks of tender lobster that dissolve as I begin to chew. I’m impressed with the quality of the soup and the fact that Binion’s follows through on the promise of actual lobster meat in the bisque.

Top of Binion's Steakhouse also offers a grand wine selection to compliment any entrée choice. As we prepare to leave, David stops by again to thank us for joining them before picking up a lively conversation with one of his many local regulars who frequent the restaurant. Top of Binion’s Steakhouse is one of the ultimate experiences in genuine, vintage Las Vegas style, located just a short drive away from the madness of the strip.

Gordon Ramsay Dishes on Las Vegas

The entire space is very dim-lit, setting a relaxing tone and lending an air of romance, accentuated by a single burning candle on every table. Each napkin is expertly fan folded, a subtle touch of elegance, and to complete the experience, we hear soft, classic ballads playing in the background. A fixture on Fremont Street since 1988, the Top of Binion's Steakhouse has been giving guests a view from the 24th floor. Of course, it started as the Top of the Mint in 1957, back when Fremont Street was still drivable and the view went all the way to the Strip.

Initially skeptical about such a seemingly unusual item, I am now a believer, and I thank the cowboy whose out-of-the-box thinking led to this delicious addition to the Top of Binion’s menu. As they arrive, I am blown away by the massive portions and the irresistible aromas of our food. The 16-ounce cut of prime rib is easily three inches thick, and David tells us that unlike many steakhouses, Binion’s serves every single cut of prime rib with the bone in. The entrée also includes sautéed green beans, natural jus, and the choice of garlic mashed, red roasted or oven baked potato; for the prime rib, I go with the garlic mash. The meat is seared with fresh peppercorn and has been cooked to a perfect, juicy medium rare, as is the standard for prime rib. The process makes this cut so tender that I hardly need to put pressure on my knife at all as it glides through the beef with relative ease.

The waiter was adequate, but did not offer us any of the sauces for our steaks, and we had to bring up our options. We were not asked to have our drinks refilled at all through the evening. With the mandatory gratuity (parties 6 or more), we feel they did not earn their tip. The wait staff should be properly trained like this is a high end restaurant as advertised. After a short drive, we enter the Binion’s Gambling Hall parking structure where parking is free for up to three hours with validation from the hotel.
